| Antimutagenic Activity Alternative Names: Antimutagenic Effect, Mutation-Protective Activity Type: Protective effect / functional outcome / genotoxicity-related outcome Function: Antimutagenic activity describes the ability of a compound, treatment, or biological intervention to reduce the formation of mutations caused by chemical, physical, or biological mutagens. Favorable Direction: ↑ Antimutagenic activity is favorable and corresponds to ↓ mutation frequency, ↓ mutagen-induced DNA damage, or ↓ genotoxicity. Mechanisms: Antimutagenic effects can result from direct scavenging or inactivation of mutagens, antioxidant activity, inhibition of metabolic activation of pro-mutagens, enhancement of detoxification, protection of DNA from reactive species, or increased repair of DNA damage. Cancer Prevention: ↑ Antimutagenic activity is generally favorable because reducing mutagen-induced DNA damage and mutation accumulation can lower mechanisms involved in carcinogenesis. Interpretation Note: Antimutagenic activity should be distinguished from antioxidant activity, DNA repair, and anticarcinogenic activity. A compound may be antimutagenic through one or more of these mechanisms, but the terms are not interchangeable. |
