| CK (Creatine Kinase; Total CK) — Enzyme present predominantly in skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and brain that catalyzes reversible phosphate transfer between creatine and ATP. Serum CK is commonly used as a clinical biomarker of muscle injury, myopathy, rhabdomyolysis, strenuous exercise, and other forms of tissue damage. Typical modulation: ↑ CK generally indicates increased muscle-cell membrane damage or tissue injury. Interpretation depends on clinical context because CK can increase after exercise, trauma, seizures, intramuscular injections, statin-associated myopathy, inflammatory myopathies, and other conditions. CK-MB (Creatine Kinase-MB Isoenzyme) — CK isoenzyme composed of one M and one B subunit and enriched in cardiac muscle. Serum CK-MB has historically been used as a biomarker of myocardial injury and acute myocardial infarction, although cardiac troponin assays are now generally more sensitive and specific. Typical modulation: ↑ CK-MB may indicate myocardial injury, but elevations can also occur with skeletal-muscle injury, surgery, trauma, or other conditions. Interpretation should therefore consider troponin measurements and the clinical context. |
