EGb 761 Ginkgo biloba-EGb 761
Description:

EGb 761 is a standardized, purified extract of
Ginkgo biloba leaves developed for medicinal use. It is typically
standardized to approximately 22–27% flavone glycosides and
5–7% terpene lactones, including ginkgolides A, B and C and
bilobalide, while potentially undesirable ginkgolic acids are
reduced to very low levels. EGb 761 has antioxidant, mitochondrial,
neuroprotective, vasoregulatory, anti-inflammatory and platelet-activating-factor
antagonist effects and has been studied extensively in cognitive impairment,
dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Reported mechanisms include reduction of
oxidative stress, stabilization of mitochondrial function, modulation of
neurotransmitter signalling, protection against amyloid-β-associated toxicity,
improved cerebral microcirculation and modulation of inflammatory pathways.
EGb 761 is kept separate from generic Ginkgo biloba supplements
because commercial extracts vary substantially in flavonoid, terpene-lactone
and ginkgolic-acid content and are not necessarily pharmacologically equivalent
to the standardized EGb 761 preparation. EGb 761 is kept separate
from isolated ginkgolides, bilobalide and ginkgolic acids

bioactive compounds such as terpenoids (Ginkgolides A, B, and C), polyphenols, organic acids, and flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetin).
EGb 761
is a dry extract from Ginkgo biloba leaves (35–67:1), extraction solvent acetone
60% (w/w). The extract is adjusted to 22.0–27.0% ginkgo flavonoids and 5.0–7.0% terpene lactones,
consisting of 2.8–3.4% ginkgolides A, B, and C and 2.6–3.2% bilobalide and contains less than 5 ppm
ginkgolic acids
