AAL Annona atemoya Leaf Extract
Description:
Annona atemoya Leaf Extract - Atemoya Leaf Extract

Alternative Names: Annona atemoya leaf extract, Atemoya leaf extract, AAL extract

Type: Botanical extract / polyphenol- and flavonoid-containing plant product

Source: Leaves of Annona atemoya, a hybrid of Annona squamosa and Annona cherimola.

Active Constituents: Reported constituents include rutin, isoquercitrin, other flavonoids, phenolic compounds, proanthocyanidins, and alkaloids. Rutin was the most abundant quantified compound in one Alzheimer’s disease-focused ethanol extract study, and both rutin and isoquercitrin inhibited amyloid-β aggregation.

Function: Annona atemoya leaf extract exhibits antioxidant, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, cholinergic, and antiproliferative activities in experimental models. Reported effects include reduction of reactive oxygen species and neuronal cell death, modulation of EGFR/GRK2 and Akt/CREB/BDNF signaling, and protection of cognitive function.

Cancer: Preclinical leaf-extract studies show antiproliferative activity against cancer cell lines including HeLa cervical cancer and HepG2 hepatocellular carcinoma cells. Activity has been associated particularly with alkaloid-containing fractions. Direct clinical anticancer efficacy has not been established.

Alzheimer's Disease: Preclinical evidence is relatively strong for a botanical extract. Annona atemoya leaf extract inhibits amyloid-β aggregation, reduces oxidative stress and neuronal cell death, and improves learning and memory in Aβ-induced Alzheimer's disease-like mouse models. Reported mechanisms include modulation of EGFR/GRK2 signaling and preservation of neuronal and neurotrophic signaling. It also improves cognitive impairment in scopolamine-treated mice through effects on cholinergic function, oxidative stress, Akt, CREB, and BDNF. Human clinical efficacy has not been established.
