Tan IIA Tanshinone IIA
Description:
Tanshinone IIA

Recommended Abbreviation: Tan IIA

Alternative Names: Tanshinone 2A, Tanshinone II A

Type: Natural product / diterpene quinone / tanshinone

Source: Major lipophilic bioactive constituent of the roots and rhizomes of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (Danshen).

Function: Tanshinone IIA has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, cardiovascular, metabolic, and anticancer activities. It modulates multiple signaling pathways involved in apoptosis, autophagy, proliferation, angiogenesis, inflammation, oxidative stress, and cellular metabolism.

Cancer: Tanshinone IIA has extensive preclinical anticancer activity across multiple tumor types. Reported effects include proliferation ↓, migration/invasion ↓, angiogenesis ↓, apoptosis ↑, autophagy modulation, and suppression of oncogenic signaling including PI3K/AKT, MAPK, JAK/STAT3, and related pathways.

Alzheimer's Disease: Tanshinone IIA has demonstrated neuroprotective and experimental anti-Alzheimer activity, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, protection against neuronal injury, and modulation of pathways associated with amyloid and neurodegenerative stress. Clinical evidence for Alzheimer's disease remains limited.
