Sonoporation is a technique that uses ultrasound waves to transiently increase the permeability of cell membranes, allowing for the enhanced delivery of drugs, genes, or other therapeutic agents into cells.

-Microbubbles (gas-filled contrast agents commonly used in ultrasound imaging) are often administered alongside the therapeutic agent. When exposed to ultrasound, these microbubbles oscillate and can collapse (a process known as cavitation). This cavitation enhances the permeability of nearby cell membranes, thus facilitating drug or gene uptake.
