PRX3 is a mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme that plays a role in scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS).
-Peroxiredoxin-3 (PRX3) works through a catalytic cycle in which it alternates between reduced and oxidized states to detoxify hydrogen peroxide and other peroxides in the mitochondria.
-In its reduced state, the active-site cysteine of PRX3 is ready to react with peroxide.
-PRX3 is overexpressed in a range of cancers compared with normal tissues.
-Elevated expression is thought to contribute to cancer cell survival under oxidative stress and may play a role in resistance against chemotherapy or radiation, which often act by generating ROS.
