Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), when labeled with the positron-emitting isotope fluorine-18 (F-18), is commonly referred to as F‑FDG. It is one of the most widely used radiotracers in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, particularly in oncology (cancer imaging).
-FDG is an analog of glucose. Cancer cells often exhibit increased glucose metabolism compared to normal cells—a phenomenon known as the "Warburg effect." Because of this, they take up more FDG.
