Lymphangiogenesis is the process of forming new lymphatic vessels from pre-existing ones. Lymphangiogenesis is regulated by a range of growth factors and molecular signals, including vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C), vascular endothelial growth factor-D (VEGF-D), and angiopoietins. Dysregulation of lymphangiogenesis has been implicated in various diseases, including cancer, lymphedema, and inflammatory disorders.
Lymphangiogenesis is often upregulated in cancer, promoting the growth and spread of tumors. The expression of lymphangiogenic factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C) and vascular endothelial growth factor-D (VEGF-D), is increased in many types of cancer, including breast, lung, colon, and melanoma.
