Trypsin is a serine protease enzyme that plays a crucial role in the digestive system by breaking down proteins into smaller peptides. Its primary function is in the small intestine, where it is activated from its precursor, trypsinogen, and helps in the digestion of dietary proteins.

Research has demonstrated that abnormal expression of trypsinogen/trypsin can occur in various cancer types.

Current research suggests that trypsin isoforms, particularly mesotrypsin (PRSS3), contribute to cancer progression through ECM degradation, activation of growth-promoting signals, and facilitation of metastasis. High expression levels have been associated with aggressive tumor behavior and poorer prognoses in various cancers.
