The von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor gene is a critical gene involved in the regulation of cell growth and response to oxygen levels in the body.
In low oxygen conditions (hypoxia), the VHL protein is less active, allowing HIFs to accumulate and activate the transcription of genes that promote angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels), erythropoiesis (production of red blood cells), and metabolic adaptation.
