MeCP2 is a nuclear protein that is mainly studied for its role as an epigenetic regulator of gene transcription. MeCP2, while being an epigenetic reader, also plays a role in the development and/or progression of several types of human cancer.
MeCP2 is generally considered protumorigenic due to its role in promoting gene silencing through DNA methylation. By repressing the expression of tumor suppressor genes, MeCP2 can facilitate tumor growth and progression.
